5 Ways to Keep you Healthier in 2021

Updated: Jun 20, 2021

Hi Friendly Followers:

Hope this letter finds you in good health. As we embark on a new year in 2021, I am happy to offer you:

5 Ways to Keep you Healthier in 2021

  1. A Hint of Mindfulness

Many adults are turning to ways that can help relieve stress. Finding a meditation practice may help. One of the easiest ways to incorporate mindfulness into your routine is to download one of the popular meditation apps to your smartphone such as “Ten Percent Happier” and “Calm”. Each app offers easy exercises you can do every day to relieve stress and gain mindfulness. Another way is just having a quiet time of worship and prayer.

  1. Virtual Fitness training

There are many online offerings of fitness classes in the comfort of your home. One resource, AARP, offers virtual classes. They are unique because they are specifically tailored to older adults. They are not only focused on strength, but building balance, mobility, and stability, which become important as we age. In addition, some of my favorite classes on YouTube are Yoga with Adrienne and Zumba Zulu.

  1. Active Vacations

Forget the cruise--go for a more socially distance vacation- and a little more adventure. Research shows that spending time in nature offers health benefits such as lower blood pressure and lower stress hormone levels as well as improved mood. A 2017 study published in Current Biology also found that it can improve sleep by resetting your circadian rhythms — your body's internal clock — to a natural sleep cycle. Visit national parks and nature museums.

  1. Plant-Based Diet

A plant-based diet is particularly beneficial for older adults, as it's been shown to lower risk and improve symptoms of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and even Alzheimer's. While switching to a plant-based diet may sound daunting, simply limiting your consumption of animal foods like lean meat, eggs and cheese to dinner can be a great way to start.

  1. Activity and Health Monitoring

There are several devices and apps you can use to do this. From Fitbit to the Apple Watch and other watch devices its easier than ever to monitor your daily activity, heart rate, and steps. Some devices go as far as measuring your blood oxygen levels. By adding simple, at home monitoring devices to your daily activity, you can know your numbers and stay active!
